How to Choose an IP Camera

2016/10/28
I know you may read so many articles about this topic, but I'd like to share my some thoughts on this topic. For me, if I am going to buy an IP Camera, I may think a lot. For instance, what do I use it for? Where do I put the IP Camera? Does it suit for my Deco style? No perfect answer, only good product to meet your needs. There are many types of IP cameras, Dome ip Camera, Box IP Camera, Bullet IP Camera. Maybe you don’t know what the differences among all these types. However, it should not be our first consideration.

First of all, we have to consider where the camera will be installed, Outdoor or Indoor? For outdoor, we suggest to choose waterproof ip camera, or weatherproof, or vandal proof, they are usually made by metal or alloy. But for indoor, waterproof is not very important factor.

Secondly, see if we need IP camera with PTZ function that helps us avoid dead areas. PTZ means pan/ tilt/ zoom, such camera usually cover up to 350 degrees at pan and up to 90 degrees at tilt. However, if you just monitor a special scene, like baby rooms, fixed lens IP camera is more suitable.

Thirdly, we have to consider the Image Quality (Resolution). So, how important the image to you? Megapixel IP camera (H.264 image compression) provides much higher resolution than VGA camera (JPEG image compression). If you need more detailed pictures, megapixel IP camera is your choice.

Then, Wired cameras or WiFi cameras? If IP camera is far away from router/ hubs or where signal is not strong enough, obviously you do not need wifi cameras. But you have to notice that, if the wired IP camera is put where power outlet is not available, you may consider POE IP camera, or POE splitter cable, or DC power pigtail.

Finally, to avoid complicated DDNS network setup, P2P function should take into account. It is the easiest and fastest one key wifi setup, no technical knowledge needed.

We may also consider some extra functions, like alarm connection, micro SD /TF slot, built-in mic/ speaker etc, all these depends on your necessity. When we ask home owners what they’re using our cameras for we consistently see home monitoring (or security, or surveillance) at the top of the list, other uses such as keeping an eye on kids and pets trailing a bit behind the peace of mind knowing your home is secure. For families looking to add protection from intruders, IP cameras act as a great deterrent but more importantly give family members a way to always know (and even see and hear) what’s going on in or around their home from anywhere.

I hope this guide is useful for you guys. And also, you are welcome to ask any questions you want to know.
